Hieroglyphics can be written in three directions: left-to-right, right-to-left, or top-to-bottom. The direction is determined by which way the signs face. You read toward the faces of the human and animal figures. If the figures face right, you read right-to-left. If they face left, you read left-to-right. Columns are always read top-to-bottom.
Royal names are enclosed in cartouches, oval rings that indicate the name within is that of a pharaoh.
