Deep Speech Translator

Deep Speech is the language of aberrations and the Far Realm in Dungeons and Dragons. Mind Flayers, Beholders, Aboleths, and other Lovecraftian horrors speak it. To non-speakers, it sounds like scraping metal and wet flesh. Type a message above and the tool looks up each English word in a Deep Speech vocabulary dictionary, outputting the Deep Speech equivalent. Toggle the mode to reverse the lookup. The translator splits your input into tokens using a regex that separates letter sequences from non-letter characters. Each word token is lowercased and looked up in a dictionary. In English-to-Deep-Speech mode, the dictionary maps English words like "mind" to "vur" and "death" to "mor". In Deep-Speech-to-English mode, the reverse lookup runs. Multi-word phrases like "elder brain" and "mind flayer" are matched first, before single-word lookup, so the longest phrase wins. Words not found in the dictionary pass through unchanged. Non-word tokens (spaces, punctuation, line breaks) are preserved exactly. The mode setting syncs to a URL query parameter, so you can share a link that preserves your configuration.

Deep Speech first appeared in D&D 3rd Edition (2000, Wizards of the Coast) and was developed further in 4th and 5th Edition. The most prominent Deep Speech speakers are Mind Flayers, also called Illithids. These are tentacled humanoids who consume brains and enslave other creatures through psychic domination. The transformation process that creates a mind flayer is called "ceremorphosis," where a tadpole is inserted into a host's brain and transforms them over several days. The vocabulary draws from several D&D sourcebooks. "Lords of Madness" (2005) details aberration biology and culture. "Elder Evils" (2007) introduces the concept of "thoon," an obsession or goal that drives some illithids. The word "ghaik" is the illithid self-designation. "Nautiloid" refers to their spelljamming vessel, a ship shaped like a nautilus shell. The official Deep Speech vocabulary is sparse across all editions, so this tool supplements attested words with fan expansions and reconstructed terms based on the language's described character.

Baldur's Gate 3 (Larian Studios, 2023) features Mind Flayers prominently. The player character begins the game infected with a tadpole, facing potential ceremorphosis. The game won Game of the Year. Larian issued surprise hotfixes in early 2026 for corrupted saves.

The Far Realm draws on H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror tradition. Deep Speech reflects this influence with its alien, grating phonology and vocabulary centered on domination, consumption, and alien knowledge.
