Newspeak is the controlled language George Orwell invented for his 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The Party designed it to shrink the range of thought available to citizens of Oceania, making dissent literally unthinkable by removing the words needed to express it. The translator splits your input into tokens using a regex that separates letter sequences from non-letter characters. Each word token is lowercased and looked up in a dictionary. In English-to-Newspeak mode, the dictionary maps English words like "bad" to "ungood" and "excellent" to "doubleplusgood". In Newspeak-to-English mode, the reverse lookup runs. Words not found in the dictionary pass through unchanged. Non-word tokens (spaces, punctuation, line breaks) are preserved exactly. The mode setting syncs to a URL query parameter, so you can share a link that preserves your configuration.

George Orwell introduced Newspeak in the appendix to Nineteen Eighty-Four, published in 1949. According to the Wikipedia article on Newspeak, the language was designed to limit freedom of thought by reducing the vocabulary available to speakers. The guiding principle is that if you cannot express a concept in words, you cannot think it. Orwell modeled the structure on Basic English and the simplified registers of totalitarian propaganda.

Newspeak achieves vocabulary reduction through several mechanisms. Irregular forms are eliminated. Antonyms are produced by prefixing "un-" rather than using a separate word, so "bad" becomes "ungood". Intensifiers use "plus-" and "doubleplus-", giving "plusgood" (very good) and "doubleplusgood" (excellent). Compound words replace phrases: "thoughtcrime" becomes "crimethink", and the Ministry of Love becomes "Miniluv". The four ministries of Oceania each get an abbreviated name: Miniluv (Love), Minipax (Peace), Minitrue (Truth), and Miniplenty (Plenty).

The Wikipedia article on doublethink describes the related concept of holding two contradictory beliefs simultaneously and accepting both. Newspeak encodes this through words like "blackwhite", which means accepting that black is white when the Party says so. Orwell drew on his observations of Soviet and Nazi propaganda to construct the language. The appendix describes a long-term goal of making all literature predating the Party unintelligible by removing the words needed to read it.

This tool performs word-level dictionary lookup, not full grammatical translation. Newspeak has its own grammar and morphology that this tool does not model. The vocabulary covers 36 terms drawn from the appendix to Nineteen Eighty-Four and related scholarship. Words outside the dictionary pass through unchanged. The tool does not apply Newspeak's compounding rules to generate new words on the fly. It also does not handle the ideological filtering that real Newspeak enforces.
